Artist Statement:
Body to Body (Dislocation, Encounter, Displacement) Series, 2005–2009
Body that attracts body. Body that rejects body. Body to body. Body that shifts, crosses, displaces. Body that scatters bodies, that suspects, that reflects. Bodies that are deposited, controlled, attacked. Bodies that inhibit bodies, that alienate bodies, that are unknown. Bodies that need bodies. Bodies that desire bodies, that hunt bodies, that pierce bodies.
Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico (1950) Víctor Vázquez earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Puerto Rico and completed doctoral-level coursework in Education and Comparative Religion at New York University. In 1982, he traveled to India, China, and Japan to study art, literature, and the cultural history of these regions. Vázquez studied photography with Jan Jurasek and attended the School of Visual Arts and the Maine Photographic Workshop, developing an artistic practice focused on the exploration of the human figure, space, and memory.
